Nigeria Strengthens Border Health Security as Government Considers Flight Restrictions Over Ebola Risk
The Federal Government of Nigeria is reviewing the possibility of placing restrictions on flights coming from countries currently affected by the Ebola virus. This step is part of renewed efforts to prevent any possible outbreak of the disease within Nigeria.
The development was announced after a high-level security and health coordination meeting held in Victoria Island, Lagos State. The meeting focused on strengthening Nigeria’s preparedness, improving surveillance systems, and ensuring a rapid response plan is in place in case of any health emergency.
According to the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the proposed measures may include limiting air travel from high-risk countries. He also noted that health officials are considering additional safety procedures at all entry points into Nigeria, including airports, where passengers showing symptoms of illness consistent with Ebola would be quickly isolated and assessed by medical teams.
He assured Nigerians that the government is committed to taking every necessary precaution to prevent the re-emergence of Ebola in the country, emphasizing that public safety remains a top priority.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, also confirmed that all international entry points into Nigeria will now be placed under closer monitoring. He explained that immigration officers will work in close collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to improve screening processes, detect potential cases early, and respond quickly to any suspected health threats.
In addition, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Jide Idris, reminded the public that Ebola is a highly dangerous viral disease with a very high risk of death and currently has no widely approved cure or vaccine. He stressed the importance of continued vigilance, especially among health workers and officials stationed at borders and airports.
The government reiterated that these preventive steps are aimed at protecting the country and ensuring that Nigeria remains free from Ebola outbreaks while maintaining safe international travel and public health security.
